Hall’s heroics deliver FNU a comeback win to open SCWS

DUBOIS, Pa. (May 12, 2025) — Conquistador softball (24-27) made a dramatic return to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Small College World Series, defeating Penn State Schuylkill (19-18) 10-7 in extra innings after a walk-off grand slam from freshman Gianna Hall.

FNU overcame a four-run deficit in the seventh frame before outlasting the Lions down the stretch for an instant classic on the turf of Heindl Field. The Conquistadors totaled 11 hits and an error in their first SCWS victory since 2023, while Schuylkill had 13 hits and one error.

In the early goings, FNU had a 1-0 lead in the first thanks to a single from Home Run Derby runner-up Madisyn Garduno, who batted in Alyssa Julien. PSU took control in the top of the third, delivering an RBI double and single from Mackenzie Carl and Keira Devor, respectively, to make it a 2-1 affair. The Conquistadors were put under even more pressure in the fifth and sixth, allowing runs from Jade Weiss, Emma Crisswell and Cealinn McGroarty.

Facing an early visit to the loser's bracket, FNU shifted gears for an impressive seventh inning to tie the game, set in motion by a two-RBI double from Julien. Julien later made it a 6-5 contest thanks to a single from Hall.
Tara McCaffery was the next Conquistador to show up big, running in pinch runner Ciara Santiago for the tying score to send the game to extra frames.

Pitcher Brunella Beteta relieved starter Sophia White after four innings and was clutch when FNU needed it most. The senior from Lima, Peru, had two strikeouts and allowed just one Schuylkill run in the eighth with one left on board.

In the final inning, FNU loaded the bases after Isabella Silva successfully advanced to second on a bunt and pushed Annissa Quinonez to third. Sabrina Castelli was subsequently hit by a pitch from Crisswell to set up the perfect scenario for any Conquistador faithful watching from home. What added to the suspense was back-to-back outs after Julien struck out and Vega popped up to Crisswell with relative ease.

With the game on the line, Hall stepped up and blasted her first home run of 2025 to left field for the grand-slam, walk-off win in DuBois, Pa. The unprecedented 10-7 victory sent FNU's dugout into jubilation, as the Conquistadors punched their tickets to another round in the winner's bracket.

Up Next: FNU looks for another win tomorrow with a 6 p.m. contest against Penn State University DuBois.
