Eight errors spoil FNU’s CAC opener

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (May 2, 2025) — Florida National (20-18) fell in its fifth Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Tournament game in three seasons, missing the mark against newcomers Spartanburg Methodist College (20-27), 13-3. In eight innings, FNU totaled nine hits but had eight costly errors under the Friday Night Lights.

SMC took a 4-0 lead through an impressive scoring run in the second and third innings. Blake Exizian got things rolling with an RBI single to left, and Leo Lopez made it safely to home plate on an error by catcher Cesar MoraMatt Smith also made it home on an error from FNU's infield in the third frame before Dario Astudillo recorded an RBI single.

FNU finally got on the board to cut the lead by two thanks to a run from Adrian Roman on Christopher Rivera's double and a one-run single off Mora's bat in the fourth. SMC responded with a massive five-run, four-hit fifth inning where four different FNU pitchers took the mound.

The Conquistadors' final run of the afternoon came from Kevin Dominici's single to right field to score Mora in the seventh before SMC nullified it with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Back-to-back infield errors in the eighth added the final two runs needed for SMC to end things before the final inning could be played.

The Pioneers had a clean game with no errors and 14 hits and are set to take on the No.1-seeded Georgia Gwinnett College Grizzlies.

Up Next: FNU plays Fisher College tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. with its CAC Tournament hopes in the balance.
