Conquistadors drop four final regular-season contests to UFTL

HIALEAH, Fla. (April 26, 2025) — Florida National baseball (20-17) dropped four consecutive games to the University of Fort Lauderdale (36-13). The No. 1-ranked team in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) delivered 18-0 and 15-1 wins on Friday night before securing the sweep with 11-4 and 13-6 routs at Ernest R. Graham Park.

To open the series between these two South Florida powerhouses, five different FNU pitchers took the mound and all had a tough time keeping UFTL's offense at bay. Wilbert Javier-Vargas was stellar, recording two home runs, a double and a single. His nine RBIs were a new program record for the Eagles, and Ryan Rifenberg followed closely behind with two doubles, a home run and four runners batted in.

FNU's Roger Viloria had the best outing for the Conquistadors, going two-for-two in the loss. Hits from Erick Rodriguez, Jason Altuve, Brian Jensen and Adrian Roman rounded out FNU's six hits. Third baseman Christopher Rivera and Cesar Mora were responsible for FNU's errors.

Friday night ended roughly for the visiting Conquistadors, as Rivera's solo home run denied UFTL back-to-back shutouts. FNU had just five hits in game two, with a staff of six pitchers allowing 13 UFTL hits and 15 runs. Righty Tristan Petty had the best showing for FNU on the mound with no earned runs and a strikeout in one inning of work.

Saturday afternoon was all about FNU's 2205 senior class after they were honored for their hard work and dedication to the FNU program before game one's first pitch. Senior Mario Benjamin got the start, as FNU took a 2-1 lead on a home run from Fausto Sanchez in the bottom of the third. UFTL answered with an impressive five-run inning in the fourth before Jordan Lewis's RBI double made it a 7-2 affair for the Eagles in the sixth.

UFTL went on to outscore FNU 4-2 in the final two frames and delivered the 11-4 victory despite Rivera running in two batters with a double to left in the seventh. Game two was an all-Eagles show, and FNU fell behind 8-0 after three innings. FNU entered the seventh down 13-0 but posted six impressive runs to close out the game.

Freshman Jorge Barba got FNU on the board with a three-run home run before Sanchez scored Samuel Del Valle with a double down the left field line. FNU squeezed out two more scores before the Eagles center fielder got the out on a flyout from Mora.
