Conquistadors drop back-to-back games against No. 16 STU

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (April 12, 2025) — Conquistador softball (19-24) fell short in a noon doubleheader against the NAIA's No. 16-ranked St. Thomas University Bobcats (40-4) Saturday. STU held on in game one despite a late surge from FNU for an 8-6 win before winning game two 6-2.

FNU had 11 hits and three errors in game one, ending game two with five hits and one error committed on the diamond of Col. Jacquelin J. Kelly Field.

The Conquistadors conceded six unanswered runs through the first three innings for a less-than-ideal scene for the remainder of the game. Outfielder Mya Achenbach stole home for the first run of the afternoon before collecting an RBI single in the second to make it a 2-0 affair. Achenbach's base running caused more trouble for FNU in the second, as she grabbed a stolen base, and Alahnis Berrios robbed home plate for the score.

Kaitlynn Martinez exited the frame with a home run to left center field, but not before veteran Natalie Kopicova grabbed an RBI sacrifice fly. In the following inning, STU made it a 6-0 affair with Jenna Donovan's sac fly, but FNU finally got on the board in the fourth thanks to Yleisha Perez's run scored on a Tara McCaffery sacrifice fly.

This run was nullified by a Berrios score on an error in the bottom of the fourth, but the fifth proved to be FNU's shining moment. Gianna Hall came alive and pelted a two-score single to set off a six-run frame for FNU. Perez singled for an Alyssa Julien run before Perez advanced to second on a wild pitch, and pinch runner Brianna Marte ran home to make it a 7-5 game.

FNU ended the fifth with a run from Perez thanks to a fielder's choice. With the pressure mounting, STU's Martinez posted her second homer of the game in the sixth to make it a two-score game late. Sabrina Castelli did manage to get on board with a single in the top of the seventh, but STU ended things with three groundouts.

Game two was a better start for Florida National. The Conquistadors took an early 1-0 lead after Carollann McClelland's smart bunt single scored McCaffery in the second inning. FNU went cold for the rest of the game, allowing six unanswered runs to close out the game. FNU final run of the afternoon came after Hall put a ball in play in teh outfield to run in Marte before the Bobcats ended the sixth inning on a double play.

In the third, STU got in front with a brilliant third frame. Gabriella Gilbert and Bianca Palacios grabbed back-to-back RBI doubles en route to a two-run lead. In the fifth, Gilbert and Palacios struck again with an RBI double and triple, respectively, making it a 5-1 score. STU ended the frame with three runs and three hits and did just enough to end its perfect afternoon at home.

Up Next: Softball has one final home doubleheader set for April 15 against Webber International University. The first pitch will be thrown at noon.
