FNU’s late push muted in 3-1 loss to Cornerstone

MELBOURNE, Fla. (March 8, 2025) — Florida National softball (9-9) dropped its second straight game in a close 3-1 contest to Cornerstone University (11-5). On day three at the USSSA Space Coast Games, FNU tallied eight hits and one error, allowing all of Cornerstone's runs in the fourth inning.

FNU's last outing at the 2025 Space Coast Games was less than ideal as FNU fell 13-1 to the No. 18-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcats. Catcher Alyssa Julien got FNU on the board with an RBI single, and FNU looked to erase those offensive woes against Cornerstone on March 8.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first three frames, with Julien, Tara McCaffery and Alyssa Songer posting singles heading into the fourth. Cornerstone's bats were not as electric. Moriah Sprague had the home team's lone hit up until that point.

The Golden Eagles changed the look of this stalemate with an astounding three-run, three-hit performance in the fourth. Cornerstone took advantage of some giveaways by the Conquistadors, scoring on a wild pitch and an RBI walk delivered by Annissa Quinonez. Alexis Ashbay recorded an RBI single in the period and the Eagles had done just enough to close out the game.

Despite the lead, FNU did show some toughness in the top of the seventh. With two outs on the board, Alissia Vega launched a single to center field that ran in Quinonez. The score stood at 3-1, and the Golden Eagles got the win on a line out by Julien.

Cornerstone totaled five hits and one error in its split afternoon.

Up Next: FNU is back in action with games opposite Indiana Tech University and Defiance College tomorrow starting at 12:15 p.m.
