Baseball goes 2-0 in a windy Tuesday doubleheader

HIALEAH, Fla. (March 4, 2025) — Conquistador baseball (10-10) seized 11-7 and 7-5 victories over the USCAA's Miami University Hamilton Harriers (0-3) at Ernest R. Graham Park. Both sides previously met at the Small College World Series in 2024, where FNU grabbed a 4-3 win on the tournament's third day.

In game one, the Conquistadors got off to a slow start. They trailed 5-0 entering the third inning, and Parker Geshan got the Harriers on the board first with a sacrifice fly. MUH added four runs and three hits in the second as starting pitcher Aliozmany Alonzo had some early difficulties before being replaced by Tristan Petty.

After Petty closed out the second, FNU posted a runless second inning before the home team went off for four runs and four hits in the third. Erick Rodriguez and Roger Viloria posted RBI singles, and third baseman Christopher Rivera scored on an error from MUH's shortstop. Brian Jensen was responsible for the last score of the frame on a sacrifice fly that brought home Jason Altuve

With just a 5-4 lead, the Harriers were held scoreless once again in the fourth, and FNU catcher Cesar Mora was undeniable in his next trip to the batter's box. The junior blasted a three-score double to give FNU its first lead of the afternoon before Altuve added another score with a sacrifice fly to the middle of the field.

FNU commanded three more runs by Alex Lopez and Fausto Sanchez, only conceding two scores on a costly error in the infield in the sixth. FNU had two errors, and MUH was responsible for three. The Conquistadors also connected on 12 hits, allowing just six by the visiting team.

Game two was another solid start for MUH, as the visitors scored on a failed pick-off attempt in the second before doubling their lead on an RBI double by Zach Birch in the third. Starting pitcher Brendan Ford regained control of the contest before being replaced in the fourth. FNU's bats finally heated up in the fifth, jump-started by a home run from leadoff hitter Sanchez. Rivera tied up the game, scoring Adrian Roman before both teams headed to the sixth.

MUH saw things go from bad to worse with a stellar five-run sixth frame for FNU. The Conquistadors had three RBI singles from catcher Ismark Gonzalez, pinch hitter Jorge Barba, and Sanchez to make it a 5-2 ball game. The Conquistadors' magical run was topped off by a two-RBI home run by Roman.

The Harriers made things interesting to start the seventh, scoring on an RBI single from Birch and back-to-back hit by pitches with the bases loaded to make it a 7-5 affair. Three different pitchers entered the frame for FNU, and Alexis Dubeau ended the game after striking out Cade Combs.

FNU posted 12 hits and four errors, while MUH recorded eight hits and one error.

Up Next: The Conquistadors retake the diamond March 10 at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. in Vero Beach, Fla., against USCAA standouts Penn State University Mont Alto and Penn State Greater Allegheny.
