Softball defeats Bruins in Round Robin finale

SPARTANBURG, South Carolina (March 30, 2025) — Conquistador softball (18-19) took care of business with a spirited 12-4 victory against the Carolina University Bruins (17-14) on Sunday. The Conquistadors recorded 13 hits and no errors through five innings to improve to 4-1 on the final day of the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Round Robin.

Florida National fell behind early, conceding two runs on a double from Kalea Bolch and a single by Cameryn Hays in the first inning. The Conquistadors got back in the game with a sacrifice fly from freshman standout Isabella Silva in the third, scoring second baseman Annissa Quinonez

The Bruins went on to score their final runs of the afternoon in the fourth. Center fielder Nicole Otto connected on an RBI sacrifice fly to left, and Danielle Brooks produced a base hit to run in ZyMaijah Thomas.

What followed for FNU was an offensive onslaught that included an eight-run, six-hit performance in the bottom of the fourth. Sabrina Castelli's two-score double got things rolling for the Conquistadors, and FNU went on to take the lead on back-to-back errors by the Bruins' third baseman, Kalea Bolch.

The Bruins could not stop the bleeding, especially when freshman Madisyn Garduno scored Silva on a base hit to left. Tara McCaffery and Yleisha Perez ended the frame with one single apiece and a combined three runs to give FNU a commanding 9-4 lead.

FNU called game in the fifth, tallying three more runs on singles from Alyssa Julien, Garduno and McCaffery. Notably, pitcher Sophia White impressed through four innings in the circle. White had no walks after facing 22 batters. Transfer Brunella Beteta came in for the fifth inning, collecting two strikeouts, allowing no runs, and giving up one hit.

Carolina had four errors and 11 hits in the program's first-ever meeting against FNU.

Up Next: The Conquistadors host the Fort Lauderdale Eagles for a noon doubleheader. FNU will also honor six seniors in a special 10:30 a.m. ceremony before the first pitch from Weston, Fla.
