Three UFTL homers sour FNU’s home doubleheader

WESTON, Fla. (April 1, 2025) — Conquistador softball (18-21) missed the mark in a home showdown against the NCCAA's University of Fort Lauderdale Eagles (27-11). Florida National honored six seniors before the Eagles soared to a 5-1 win in game one and an 8-1 victory at Vista Park.

To start things off, seniors Yleisha Perez, Alexis Lendo, Alisha Vohs, Thanysha Gil, Tara McCaffery and Alyssa Songer all took a ceremonial trip around the bases with their families to commemorate their time as Conquistadors. Once the festivities ended, Florida National faced an early 1-0 deficit in the opening inning of game one.

UFTL's Alexia Geary bombed a beauty down the left field line over the fence to put FNU under pressure right out of the gate. FNU tied things up at the bottom of the frame with Perez's RBI groundout. Despite Isabella Silva's run, the Eagles used an impressive third inning to put some real distance between themselves and the home team.

Kaitlyn Nieves scored on an error by Songer, and Alaska's own Cameron Rollison made it a 3-1 affair on a single to right center to run in Cheyenne Southers. The Eagles capped off their brilliant showing with a two-score home run by Makenzi Heaton.

Pitcher Sophia White fell two short of 100 career strikeouts in the loss but allowed only six hits and walked two batters. FNU posted the only error of the game, and UFTL went to the dugout with six hits.

In game two, FNU got on the board first, thanks to an RBI groundout by freshman Gianna Hall. UFTL responded with an 8-0 run through the remainder of the contest. An RBI single and double from Kaylee Wilt and Alexis Stahlman, respectively, put the Eagles on top 2-1 in the second. In the fourth, UFTL totaled four runs and two hits to ice out FNU at Vista Park.

Notably, Geary connected on a triple to make it a 6-1 affair before the Eagles recorded two more scores in the seventh off an RBI single by Katie Adkins and a powerful home run off Heaton's bat.

Starting pitcher Brunella Beteta ended the contest with four strikeouts and one walk. The Conquistadors are 4-4 against UFTL all-time and have fallen in their last three meetings.

Up Next: Softball hosts RV Keiser University on Friday for a noon doubleheader at Vista Park.
