FNU takes care of Haskell for a 1-1 day two in South Carolina

SPARTANBURG, South Carolina (March 29, 2025) — Florida National softball (17-19) recorded a close 3-1 loss to the No. 8-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College Grizzlies (26-5) before dominating Haskell Indian Nations University (2-21) 12-2. FNU is now 3-1 against Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) teams in 2025.

Against GGC, FNU did a great job holding off a stellar Grizzlies offense through the first five innings of play. Georgia Gwinnett recorded 20 runs against Columbia College in its previous outing, yet was kept in check by an impressive performance by pitcher Sophia White

White allowed just three hits before GGC went to work in the sixth for a 3-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Grizzly Makenna Talcott recorded an RBI walk to run in Sara Roussel for the first score of the day. Things went from bad to worse when pinch hitter Savannah Jenkins connected on a two-score single to left field.

In the bottom of the frame, FNU did make it a two-run affair thanks to a sacrifice fly by second baseman Gianna Hall. White allied one more hit but kept GGC off the board in the seventh.

Despite a manageable deficit, GGC's defense held up to end the game on a pop-out to shortstop. FNU had two errors, and the Grizzlies had one. The Conquistadors ended the loss with four hits, and GGC recorded six.

Game two was a better showing for Florida National on the offensive side of the ball. FNU took a commanding 3-0 in the second and added three more scores in the third. Haskell did manage one run in the fourth but was outscored 5-1 in the fifth for an early exit in the Palmetto State.

Pitcher Brunella Beteta had four strikeouts and one earned run on the board. FNU had five stolen bases and 13 hits. Catcher Alyssa Julien and shortstop Tara McCaffery were special with a two-for-three afternoon. McCaffery also accounted for three of FNU's 10 RBIs.

Haskell ended the contest with eight hits and five errors. FNU posted just two errors in its first-ever match up against Haskell.

Up Next: FNU exits the CAC Round Robin with an 11 a.m. game against Carolina University tomorrow.
