FNU rolls through CAC Round Robin

SPARTANBURG, South Carolina (March 28, 2025) — Florida National softball (16-18) got back in the win column with a 6-3 win over Columbia College (15-18) and a conference victory over Spartanburg Methodist College (15-13) 4-2.

FNU opened play at the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Round Robin hosted by newcomers Spartanburg Methodist at Tyger River Park. Florida National entered the tournament fresh off a winless afternoon against St. Ambrose on March 21.

Against the Columbia Fighting Koalas, FNU ended the game with 12 hits and no errors on the board. FNU's first lead of the contest came in the third inning after Gianna Hall grounded out to the CC shortstop, running in center fielder Alissia VegaThe Koalas made things interesting in the fourth, tying the game on an RBI double by Lana Hampson. Luckily, FNU was up to the challenge and posted a stellar four-run, five-hit performance at the bottom of the frame.

Infielder Yleisha Perez got things rolling on an RBI single early in the fourth before scoring a run of her own on a base hit by Isabella Silva. RBI singles off Vega and Alyssa Julien's bats proved to be enough to keep CC at bay in the Palmetto State. Maggie Hinz did manage an impressive two-score single in the seventh, but pitcher Sophia White wrapped up the victory with a lineout on Aliyah Crawley. White ended the afternoon with four strikeouts and only three batters walked.

Against SMC, FNU returned to some long-awaited conference play with a bang. The visiting team took a 2-0 lead in the first, thanks to back-to-back sacrifice flies by Julien and Hall. Pioneer catcher Alex Stuckey cut FNU's lead in half in the bottom of the inning, posting a double to right center field that ran in Gracie Starnes.

Spartanburg continued to pressure FNU, leveling the game on another Stuckey hit, recording Starnes' second run of the day. The Conquistadors utilized another sacrifice fly, this time from Tara McCaffery, to retake the lead in the fifth. Perez fouled out left and bought enough time to run in Julien to make it a 4-2 affair.

Pitcher Brunella Beteta was able to hold off SMC for the rest of the contest, ending the game with five strikeouts in her fifth victory from the circle this season. FNU had nine hits and no errors, while SMC recorded four hits.

Up Next: FNU continues its stay in South Carolina with an 11 a.m. contest against No. 8 Georgia Gwinnett College tomorrow.
