FNU shut out by St. Ambrose Friday

WESTON, Fla. (March 21, 2025) — Conquistador softball (14-18) ended the week on a sour note, dropping back-to-back games against visiting St. Ambrose University (14-12). The Conquistadors had eight hits through both games and conceded a costly six errors on the diamond at Vista Park.

In game one, neither side could break through until the final two innings. St. Ambrose had left six runners on board before finally cracking the game open in the sixth on an RBI single by Brynnlin Kroymann. FNU answered the challenge, however, at the bottom of the frame. Alissia Vega scored on a passed ball and an error from the Fighting Bees' shortstop allowed a run from catcher Alyssa Julien

Unfortunately for FNU, they had two errors in the top of the seventh to fall behind 5-2. The home team's bats would ultimately come up short in the seventh, as FNU allowed 11 hits and produced just seven while in the batter's box.

Game two was a tough outing for the Conquistadors from start to finish. FNU fell behind 3-0 in the first two innings, giving up two runs on an error by shortstop Annissa Quinonez and a one-score double in the second. Things went from bad to worse in the third when Becca Haag made it a 4-0 affair with a home run.

FNU's lone hit of game two was courtesy of third baseman Thanysha Gil's single in the bottom of the third. FNU was only able to score once in the seven-run loss, running in Yleisha Perez on an error by the Bees' infield in the fifth.

While this was promising, FNU allowed three more runs, including a two-RBI homer by pinch hitter Janna Bowser in the top of the sixth. The Conquistadors ended the game with four errors, and St. Ambrose headed back to Iowa with nine hits and one error recorded.

Up Next: Softball heads to South Carolina for the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Round Robin starting March 28.
