Garduno collects first collegiate home run in Tuesday’s sweep over FMU

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (March 18, 2025) — Softball (14-16) made a lot of noise in its two-game sweep of the Florida Memorial University Lions (10-12) Tuesday. FNU grabbed a 5-2 win in game one before leaving Walt Frazier Park with a 4-2 victory.

In game one, FNU did all of its damage in the first frame, placing its first two batters on board with back-to-back walks. Lions pitcher Leny Hoyos continued to struggle in the first, conceding a single to catcher Alyssa Julien to load the bases. Second baseman Gianna Hall cleared the deck with a three-RBI double to left field to put the Conquistadors on top. This forced the Lions to pull from their dugout and bring in relief pitcher Emma Silva for the rest of the game.

Despite the switch, things went from bad to worse for the home team. Freshman Madisyn Garduno picked her spot perfectly for a two-score home run to make it a 5-0 affair. This was the Lake Placid, Fla., first home run at the college level and FNU exited an eventful first inning with five hits and two left on.

FMU threatened FNU's advantage in the bottom of the second, scoring two runs on an error by Hall. The Lions followed this up with an RBI single by Ariyuana DuPont to close out the third. FNU kept its composure, using pitchers Sophia White and Annissa Quinonez to keep another Lions' run off the box score. Quinonez ended the game with two strikeouts and no walks while winning pitcher White had one strikeout and one earned run. FNU tallied eight hits and two errors.

Game two had a less-than-exciting opening two innings, with each team remaining scoreless until the Lions broke through in the third. A sacrifice fly from Ciera Taylor earned FMU its first run of game two and its first lead of the afternoon. They held onto that lead until the sixth when FNU posted a four-run, four-hit frame.

Alissia Vega got things rolling with an RBI double to tie the game before Hall worked her magic again with a base hit to score Vega for the 2-1 lead. FNU hung two more unearned runs to end the frame thanks to a single from Garduno.

The Lions had a chance in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Natalia Alvarez to make it a two-score affair. Luckily for FNU, shortstop Heidy Olivo was called out on a fly ball to center field with two runners left stranded. FNU ended the game with seven hits and three errors.

Up Next: St. Ambrose University comes to Weston, Fla., on Friday for an 11:30 a.m. doubleheader.
