Conquistadors stumped by Bobcats Sunday

HIALEAH, Fla. (March 16, 2025) — Conquistador baseball (16-13) dropped its series against the Bryant & Stratton College Albany Bobcats (3-12), falling in back-to-back games at Walker Park. BSC defeated Florida National 5-2 before posting a familiar 11-10 loss past sundown in the City of Progress.

In game one, FNU missed the mark despite recording six runs and one error. The Bobcats posted just three hits, using an explosive third inning to claim the game. Initially, the Conquistadors claimed a 1-0 lead thanks to a powerful home run bomb by Fausto Sanchez to left field in the first.

FNU clung to this lead until the third, when Bobcat Luis Monte De Oca got on to second with a two-score double. Infielder and game two catcher Enrique Lopez followed this up, running in Odilio Cespedes with a single to left field. With the score at 3-1, the Conquistadors fought back after Adrian Roman got a base hit down the right field line for a run by Christopher Rivera

BSC was able to wrap things up, scoring two runs after Luis Garcia made it to first on an error by shortstop Jason Altuve. Pitcher Mario Benjamin was credited with the loss, ending the afternoon with three innings and three strikeouts under his belt. Tristan Petty tallied four strikeouts in four innings.

When the dust settled and play resumed in game two, the Bobcats took an early 1-0 on an RBI single by Tim Thomas before taking control of the game in a five-run first frame. Designated hitter Christopher Rivera was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game. RBI base hits by Roman and freshman Jorge Barba tallied three more runs, and FNU scored another runner on a costly fielder's choice.

FNU held a 6-1 lead before Lopez and Thomas connected on doubles to add three more runs to the Bobcats' total. Luckily, FNU's Roger Viloria chose the bottom of the third to pelt a home run to left field that scored Roman. FNU outscored the Bobcats 2-1 through the fourth and sixth innings ahead of another thrilling final game.

Up 10-5 in the top of the seventh, BSC produced another magical, unprecedented comeback with three one-score singles, scoring on an error in the infield and a one-run double from Thomas to take the lead. FNU threw in four pitchers before Oliver Rutherford got the final out to put FNU back on the offensive side of the ball.

Trying to avoid another upset, FNU was in great shape as Viloria made it on to second base with a double. Pinch runner Endrys Nunez made it to third on a sac bunt delivered by Barba.

The Bobcats executed well down the stretch, especially fielding the ball. Alber De La Rosa picked up a nice lineout for the second put out of the inning, and BSC iced the game on a swinging strike by second baseman Christian Febus

FNU was credited with five hits and two errors in its heartbreaking loss. The Bobcats tallied 14 hits along with two errors.

Up Next: Baseball takes a short break before entering a conference series in Sumter, South Carolina. FNU will battle Morris College in a four-game road slate starting April 4.
