Game Recap: Baseball | | Brenda Bogle

Baseball goes 1-1 in a dramatic, thrilling USCAA battle

HIALEAH, Fla. (March 15, 2025) — Florida National baseball (16-11) delivered another classic battle against Bryant & Stratton College Albany (1-12), splitting the series' first two games at Ernest R. Graham Park. FNU earned a 6-4 victory in game one before an improbable comeback in game two saw the Bobcats exit Alex Fernandez field on top, 13-12.

Florida National's 6-4 win to start the afternoon's action was filled with intrigue and suspense. Despite holding a 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI groundout by Cesar Mora that ran in Christian Febus, FNU saw itself behind three scores in the fifth.

Odilio Cespedes got the Bobcats ahead with a two-RBI home run that ended the afternoon for starting pitcher Alexis Dubeau. Those were the only runs allowed by the Canadian right-hander, and Dubeau went to the dugout with one strikeout and four walks. BSC went on to post two more scores against relief pitcher Cole Philips and added three more hits before the end of the frame.

Luckily for FNU, they retook the lead in the sixth, scoring on two passed balls and tallying three runs on singles off Adrian Roman and Roger Viloria. Pitcher Tristian Petty grabbed the win, recording a strikeout and allowing no runs. Closer Evan Dalmau ended the game with a clutch save that included a strikeout of his own.

Game two was another hot start for FNU, as the Conquistadors went ahead 3-0 in the second. The frame included a home run by third baseman Christopher Rivera and an RBI single by Viloria. Once again, BSC showed some grit to go ahead by one run at the midway point. Janderlis Cabrera launched a three-RBI double in the frame, and Luis Monte De Oca connected on a single to run in Cespedes.

FNU tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, running in Jason Altuve on a single by Febus. Cespedes grabbed another run, thanks to a two-base hit from catcher Enrique Lopez in the fifth before Viloria leveled things once again on an RBI single to center field.

The Bobcats made it a 6-5 game in the sixth before FNU scored six runs in the sixth to seemingly blow the game open. Fausto Sanchez tripled to start FNU's run before Viloria and Brian Jensen tallied one-score singles. Sanchez also ended the frame with a hard-earned run after Rivera was fouled out at left field.

With the top of the seventh rolling along, all things pointed to another Conquistador win on home field. To the shock of every Conquistador faithful, the Bobcats clawed their way back into contention with an incredible seven-run inning to take a 13-12 lead. Three different FNU pitchers took the mound, and none could stop the onslaught of late runs from the visiting team. Cabrera doubled for two runs before scoring on an error by Altuve that could've ended the game.

Mental mistakes piled up, and Monte De Oca brought home another run after being hit by a costly pitch from Cole Philips that made it a one-score game. Lopez brought home the game-winning runs on an infield RBI single before FNU closed out the frame on a fly out to center field.

In the bottom of the inning, Febus got on board with a single before advancing to third on a groundout by Sanchez. Febus attempted to score the tying run with two outs on the board after a ball went past catcher Maximiliano Arroba. Unfortunately, Arroba tossed the ball back to pitcher Jayden Meregildo, who expertly covered home plate for the tag that ended the game.

FNU had 16 hits, allowing 13 to the Bobcats. BSC totaled four errors, while FNU had one.
