Conquistadors send Fisher packing in a 14-hit afternoon

HIALEAH, Fla. (March 1, 2025) — Florida National baseball (8-10) improved to 2-1 in Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) play after a stellar 15-9 win over Fisher College (7-3). The Conquistadors claimed the series with two consecutive victories at Ernest R. Graham Park.

FNU connected on 14 hits to close out its head-to-head against the Falcons March 1, while FC heads back to Boston, Mass., with 13 hits and two errors.

In the opening frame, designated hitter Yariel Salinas got things started on a fly out to center that scored Armando Torres for the first run of the afternoon. Jatnier Torres made his mark early against starting pitcher Mario Benjamin, collecting an RBI base hit after beating out a throw from FNU's shortstop Jason AltuveBenjamin was locked in for the Conquistador, working the mound for 6.1 innings en route to nine strikeouts.

FNU did not have to trail for long, as the home team recorded five runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-2 lead. Erick Rodriguez and Brian Jensen posted RBI singles in the inning to get things rolling. Christian Febus and Fausto Sanchez added to FNU's run total with one-score doubles to end the second.

The Conquistadors continued to pour it on in the third, claiming three runs on an RBI single by Roger Viloria and a clutch two-score single off Altuve's bat that bought enough time for him to stride to second base.

Fisher got some of its juice back in the fourth, thanks to a two-score double by Gilbert Gomez that ran in Armando Torres and outfielder Anthony Ventura. Fisher's pitching became an issue in the fourth, as pitcher Samuele Sbardolini gave up two RBI walks to Viloria and Jensen. He was later replaced on the mound by Spencer Monroe, and he made it out of the inning with just one run scored on a sacrifice fly by Altuve.

The Conquistadors held Fisher scoreless in the fifth and went to work to get some separation from their opponent. Christopher Rivera capped off an exceptional 3-4 afternoon by adding an RBI double to center field before catcher Cesar Mora brought the crowd to its feet with his first home run in a Conquistador uniform.

Mora's hitting must have been contagious as Fisher's Torres and Salinas bombed solo home runs to start the seventh. Gabriel Rivera and catcher Ruben Rodriguez picked up a combined three RBIs in the seventh to make it a manageable 14-9 affair, but Viloria helped close out the game with a stellar sac fly to left field to run in pinch runner Oscar Orta.

Closer Tristian Petty iced the game with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings on the mound.
