Conquistadors send Ambassadors packing in morning doubleheader

HIALEAH, Fla. (Feb. 6, 2025) — Florida National baseball (5-6) executed a 4-0 midweek sweep of the Oakwood University Ambassadors (0-6) in a late-morning doubleheader on the diamond of Ernest R. Graham Park. The Conquistadors dominated game one 13-5 before holding steady in a 4-1 win in game two.

At the start of the third contest between these two squads, FNU's Brian Jensen ran in Fausto Sanchez off a clutch base hit. Jensen later visited home plate courtesy of an error from Oakwood's second baseman, and FNU eventually ended the frame with a 3-0 lead. Oakwood got back in the groove in the second on a single by Akari David that bought enough time for outfielder Jorge Hernandez to stride safely across home plate for the score.

The Ambassadors' run was soon nullified on a sacrifice fly by Sanchez in the second. A two-RBI single by Roger Viloria highlighted a two-run, three-hit stretch for FNU in the third inning. The Conquistadors scored seven unanswered runs over the next three frames before starting pitcher Josh Higgins began to show some fatigue on an uncharacteristic RBI hit by a pitch in the seventh. Higgins was great throughout the contest with eight strikeouts and one walk before Edgar Santos entered the pitcher's mound to deliver FNU's final two outs to end game one. Notably, FNU won the hits race 8-6 and committed just one error in the victory.

In game two, both teams posted donuts in the opening inning, and FNU put themselves ahead with a two-run second frame. Shortstop Alex Lopez got the Conquistadors on the board first with a fair ball down the left field line to run in Viloria. Christian Febus had the same idea with a base hit to right center field that scored Lopez for the final run of the period.

Righty Mario Benjamin was stellar to start the game, holding Oakwood scoreless until the fifth inning. The Ambassadors posted a run on a fielder's choice at the tail end of the fifth, but FNU went back to work on its next opportunity on offense. In his third trip to the batter's box, Sanchez brought the boom on a solo homer before Christopher Rivera scored on a wild pitch.

FNU's fifth-inning explosion was enough to keep Oakwood at bay and relief pitcher Isaiah Franco ended the game with back-to-back strikeouts. The home team exited the match with six hits and one error, while Oakwood had three hits and two errors.

Up Next: FNU has two games on the road on Feb. 12 against No. 8-ranked Webber International University at noon and Warner University at 6 p.m.
