Baseball bested by No. 8 Warriors on the road

BABSON PARK, Fla. (Feb. 12, 2025) — Florida National (5-7) scored a late run in the eighth inning to avoid a shutout against the NAIA's No.8-ranked Webber International University Warriors (8-1). WIU claimed a 7-1 victory over the Conquistadors and Florida National has now fallen to the Warriors in eight of its last nine meetings in Babson Park, Fla.

WIU had its breakout inning in the second thanks to a two-RBI home run by designated hitter Bryan Morales. Before Morales' bomb, starting pitcher Alexis Dubeau did not give up a hit in the opening frame. Webber exited the second with a 2-0 lead and three hits off the lefty from Mascouche, Quebec, Canada.

The Warriors added one more run to their total in the third thanks to a routine groundout on Brandon Sanchez that bought enough time for Joseph Becker to stride comfortably from third to home plate. FNU was able to stop the bleeding in the fourth before conceding two runs in the fifth on a costly balk and an RBI single by shortstop Nate Cannizzaro.

FNU's lone run of the day came off the bat of a crushing home run by Christian Febus in the eighth. FNU faced a manageable four-run deficit heading into the bottom of the inning, and Webber was able to essentially ice the game with a two-run performance in the eighth. WIU made it home on a costly error by catcher Cesar Mora and an RBI base hit from center fielder J'Quann Smith.

The Conquistadors had one hit in the ninth off Mora's bat but saw their comeback hopes erased on a swinging strike by Adrian Roman. FNU ended the game with four hits and three errors. Webber posted eight hits and was credited with two errors.

Up Next: FNU heads for Augusta, Ga., for a three-game series against Paine College starting Feb. 22.
