Baseball goes 1-1 on day one in Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. (Feb. 22, 2025) — Florida National baseball (6-8) claimed an 11-10 win against the Paine College Lions (3-3) before suffering a defeat in game two 4-3. FNU is now 4-5 on the road against the Lions in its last nine meetings and will look to claim the series tomorrow afternoon.

FNU survived a close battle in game one thanks to excellent pitching from closer Evan Dalmau. FNU took a 6-2 lead in the second inning and added five more in the third. To their credit, the Lions fought back late with eight unanswered runs through the next four innings.

Paine's run also included a dangerous home run by Rayvion Alexander in the seventh off a pitch from Dalmau. But the righty kept his cool to close the frame and earn the save for the afternoon. Before Dalmau's time on the mound, Alexis Dubeau had done great work in 3.2 innings with two strikeouts.

Notably, Fausto Sanchez made a huge difference with three RBIs, two hits and two runs in the win. The Conquistadors ended the game with one error to the Lions' two.

In game two, Paine College put themselves ahead 3-0 early in the first before grabbing its game-winning run in the third. Jhoel Melone was the star of the show with the game's only home run as FNU seemed to run out of juice at the end of the dual.

Despite the one-score loss, FNU recorded runs by Roger Viloria, Adrian Roman and pinch runner Kevin Dominici. Sanchez impressed once again with two hits on four trips to the batter's box. Starting pitcher Josh Higgins claimed five strikeouts in five innings before Aliozmany Alonzo did a solid job of keeping things close with no runs or hits allowed in his one-inning appearance on the mound.

Paine exited their home field with no errors and seven hits. FNU posted four hits and a clean sheet with no errors on the board.

Up Next: The Conquistadors exit Georgia tomorrow after one final contest against Paine College at 1 p.m.
