Conquistadors lose road series in three-run defeat Sunday

AUGUSTA, Ga. (Feb. 23, 2025) — Florida National (6-9) posted its second straight setback against the Paine College Lions (4-3) Sunday afternoon. Paine recorded a 6-3 victory in a nine-inning thriller to claim the series with a 2-1 record over three days.

FNU stood tall in the first two frames before falling behind 5-0 in the third inning. Paine lost the hits race with just seven to FNU's 12, but what set the Lions apart was their efficient ability to run the bases throughout the contest. Vladimir Lemos was one of two lions to post a stolen base, while FNU was caught stealing with Christian Febus and Jorge Barba

Starting pitcher Mario Benjamin conceded three of the Lions' six runs in the loss despite claiming three strikeouts on the mound. Julian Cazanas also grabbed three strikeouts in his 1.1 innings of work before closers Cole Philips and Evan Dalmau took over. FNU's pitching staff tallied 10 walks and 11 strikeouts against tough Lion batters.

Paine grabbed one more score in the sixth after FNU got on the board at the top of the period. This was a positive move for FNU and the Conquistadors were knocking on the door in the ninth with two late runs before Paine was able to ice the battle in Augusta, Ga.

Febus had a solid performance, recording an RBI and going 3-5 from the batter's box. Catcher Cesar Mora was also productive with two hits and outfielder Erick Rodriguez went 2-2 with a run scored.

Up Next: FNU turns its attention to conference rival Fisher College starting Feb 28, as the Falcons flock to Ernest R. Graham Park for a three-game series over two days.
