Rivera brings the boom in split afternoon

HIALEAH, Fla. (Feb. 28, 2025) — Conquistador infielder Christopher Rivera collected two home runs in Florida National's (7-10) 11-9 win over the Fisher College Falcons (7-2) Friday. The Conquistadors dropped a close game one 7-6 to split the afternoon in a high-energy Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) battle at Ernest R. Graham Park.

In game one, the Falcons escaped with a one-run victory thanks to a 6-1 lead through the first four innings. Conquistador Christian Febus was the first runner to score in the opener, striding home thanks to an error by Fisher's shortstop.

Fisher then went on to score six unanswered runs through the third and fourth frames after tying the game in the second on an error from third baseman Brian Jensen. Yariel Salinas and Gilbert Gomez each recorded RBI doubles during the Falcons' scoring streak. Jatnier Torres also blasted a one-score base hit early in the third.

But FNU did not give up despite the deficit. Jensen made up for his early blunder with an RBI single in the sixth that kicked off a four-run frame for the home team. Jason Altuve and Febus followed with one-score hits of their own to make it a three-run contest. Febus shined once more on an RBI sacrifice fly to close out FNU's stellar sixth inning.

In the seventh, FNU posted one more valiant run thanks to pinch hitter Jason Rmaos and a sacrifice fly that scored Kevin Dominici. Unfortunately, pitcher Maylo Sierra put the finishing touches on his second save in 2025, striking out Febus to end the game.

Game two was the Rivera show, as the third baseman bombed a solo homer in the first following an RBI groundout by Fausto Sanchez to run in Febus. This highlighted a five-run performance from the Conquistadors, including a two-RBI double by Roger Viloria and Oscar Orta, making it safely home on a costly passed ball.

Fisher went on to cut FNU's lead to three in the fourth before a two-score single in the bottom og the frame, courtesy of Erick Rodriguez, nullified the Falcons' scores. Things got interesting on a three-RBI homer by Torres in the fifth. FNU responded with a three-run performance that included Rivera's second hit to leave the ballpark for three scores.

Fisher continued to swing in the seventh, picking up a lucky single that stayed fair down the left field line for two dangerous runs for the visitors. Torres scored once again on an error by closer Evan Dalmau, but the righty was able to end the one with a strikeout and a fly out to right field.

FNU totaled 19 hits through both games and five errors. Fisher recorded 15 hits and just two errors.

Up Next: The Conquistadors close out the series tomorrow with a nine-inning noon contest against the FC Falcons.
