FNU completes season sweep of UFTL Eagles

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Feb. 4, 2025) — Florida National (7-11) went 2-0 this season against the University of Fort Lauderdale Eagles with a strong 77-58 victory Tuesday. The Conquistadors also posted their seventh win of the season behind Janelisse Marty Marrero's triple-double of 18 points, 16 rebounds and 12 assists.

Charlette Leurs dominated the first quarter for the Conquistadors with eight points and a board in seven minutes of play. Against her former team, Leurs continued to dominate the paint and went 4-4 from the free-throw line in the opening minutes. Marty Marrero also had eight in the opening frame in a 3-7 performance from the field, including two made threes. Notably, FNU was shooting well from long range as Kyla Cruz Baez pushed FNU to 60% shooting from long range in the period.

Despite shooting the ball well, FNU led by just three heading into the second. A 22-7 scoring run in the second quarter proved to be just the cure for the Conquistadors at the midway point. Before the break, Leurs added seven points to her total to help FNU command a 47-29 lead. Marty Marrero and Cruz Baez combined for nine, while UFTL was held to just two made field goals in the period. The Eagles' Nina Solomon was held to just three points after posting eight in the first, and FNU seemed poised to truly close out the game in the early position of the second half.

UFTL, to its credit, put a great frame in the third quarter. The Eagles outscored FNU 15-12 thanks to eight from Maiya Petit. FNU struggled to get the ball in the net in the frame, shooting 29.4%. Leurs was responsible for five of FNU's 12 rebounds in the third as FNU still held a comfortable 59-44 lead heading into the final quarter.

The Conquistadors outscored UFTL 18-14 in the final minutes, as Leurs added five rebounds and four points to her 21 points and 15 rebounds. This is Leurs ninth straight game with a double-double and Cruz Baez recorded a terrific outing of 18 points, six rebounds and six assists.

Notably, Fabiana Nieves had seven points in 24 minutes, and Aaliyah Abdala had two threes on the way to an eight-point evening.
