Women’s hoops corrals Blazers in a 74-52 victory

LEESBURG, Fla. (Feb. 12, 2025) — Women's basketball (8-11) recorded its second consecutive win Wednesday night after a comfortable 74-52 victory against the Beacon College Blazers (3-6). FNU was in top form in its first-ever meeting against the Blazers in Leesburg, Fla.

Beacon College joined the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) in 2023 and looked to grab a win against a talented Conquistador squad fresh off a 77-58 win over the University of Fort Lauderdale on Feb. 4.

FNU got off to a respectable start in the first quarter, leading 13-8. Before the break, the Conquistador continued to add to its total and were the proud owners of a 14-point lead heading into the third frame. FNU's Charlette Leurs was her usually stellar performer at the rim and ended the game with another double-double performance.

The Blazers did manage to show some fight in the second half, after a disastrous third quarter where the home team conceded a 15-point third quarter to the Conquistadors. Beacon only had five points to show for the 10-minute third period but did outscore FNU 24-22 in the fourth when the game was confidently in the hands of the visiting team.

Notably, Beacon played with just five players and the Conquistadors had a lot of production from some key role players. Fabiana Nieves had a solid double-figure evening and Kyla Cruz Baez was critical to FNU's success throughout the contest. Janelisse Marty Marrero was also special in one of her final regular season games as a Conquistador.

Up Next: The Conquistadors are in New Port Richey, Fla., for a 1 p.m. game against the Trinity College of Florida Tigers on Feb. 15.
