FNU bounces back with undefeated afternoon over Oakwood

HIALEAH, Fla. (Feb. 5, 2025) — Conquistador baseball (3-6) took care of business against the Oakwood University Ambassadors (0-4) on Wednesday. FNU exited a dangerous seventh frame to claim a 9-3 win in game one before outlasting a resilient Oakwood squad 16-15 to exit Ernest R. Graham Park.

In game one, FNU got on the board after the second failed pickoff from Oakwood's starting pitcher, Dakota Cobb, opened the door for Christian Febus to dash safely across home plate. FNU added to its early advantage on a sacrifice fly from shortstop Jason Altuve in the second inning before back-to-back RBI singles from Erick Rodriguez and Brian Jensen broke the game open in the third.

Oakwood was reeling with just two hits heading into the fourth. They were held scoreless once again as FNU added three more runs in the bottom of the inning. In the fifth, Fausto Sanchez delivered a two-RBI single to make it a 9-0 affair. Starting pitcher Alexis Dubeau was holding steady, allowing just five hits before entering the seventh.

Things started to go astray for the Canadian lefty in the top of the final frame as he pelted two batters back-to-back for the first Oakwood score of the afternoon. Oakwood posted a two-run single before Dubeau was pulled for the final out of the frame. Evan Dalmau closed out the game from the mound and Febus ended the game with a 4-3 groundout on Jorge Hernandez.

In game two, FNU jumped to a 9-2 lead in the first after Oakwood's pitcher, Argenis Rosario, had four walks and allowed an RBI walk before being replaced with just one out under his belt. This was the first of three runs scored on a walk in the frame. FNU had just two hits in the first but added to its lead on an RBI hit by pitch and scored on a wild pitch from substitute Anthony Brent Jr.

After the Ambassadors were able to end the first, FNU added one more score in the second from Roger Viloria. Oakwood showed some fight in the third after a home run from Jeremy Matos left the ballpark. This would be the catalyst for an unprecedented 10-run inning for the visitors in the fourth that put Oakwood ahead 13-10. OWU had seven hits, two RBIs on walks and two on a costly hit by pitches. Three different pitchers took the mound for FNU, and Cole Philips was able to end the frame on his third batter faced.

Luckily for FNU, it avoided a total collapse after Ahmad Woods' untimely error at right field allowed FNU to cut the lead to one. This was a short-lived victory as OWU got its advantage bumped back to three in the sixth. But this did not deter FNU's catcher Ismark Gonzalez from bombing a two-RBI single just when his team needed it most. Samuel Del Valle tied the game on a sacrifice fly, and FNU held down the fort to keep Oakwood off the board in the seventh.

Oakwood's Brent Jr. had hit a wall, allowing back-to-back runners on board after hitting them with his first two throws of the final frame. But Oakwood's closer Eli Kennedy conceded the team's third hit by pitch and walked Rodriguez with the bases loaded to send Cesar Mora home for the walk-off win.

FNU tallied just six hits in its game-two win, while the Ambassadors had 13. The home team had no errors in game one and just one in game two.
