Softball sweeps back-to-back games in exciting home opener

WESTON, Fla. (Feb. 3, 2025) — Florida National (2-1) picked up two stellar one-score wins in its first home stand of the 2025 regular season. The previously undefeated New College of Florida Banyans (4-2) were handed 3-2 and 5-4 losses by a resilient FNU squad in Weston, Fla.

Game one was a nine-inning, gritty battle on the clay with both teams entering the eighth scoreless. FNU had multiple chances to get on the scoreboard early, including a walk on Sophia White in the fourth that left the bases loaded. NCF was able to end the frame with an out to second base. Third baseman Thanysha Gil performed a textbook sacrifice bunt to advance pinch runner Alexandra Trenholm to third in the sixth.

The Banyans, however, quickly rallied from this late-game surge with a line out to their pitcher Jayleigh Totten and a solid third strike pitch that froze White. Despite both teams remaining scoreless in regulation, extra innings turned into a slugfest.

NCF got things started with an RBI double by Haley Rosenbaum. A few plays later, she made her way to home plate on an error from FNU's shortstop. Facing a 2-0 deficit and with the game on the line, Alissia Vega came up big with a single that ran in Yleisha Perez. Vega strode into home plate after a bunt from Tara McCaffery to keep things alive for the Conquistadors.

FNU ended NCF's time on offense with three precise outs and posted a massive offensive run to load the bases on a single from Perez. Vega's bat was money once again for a base hit to right field that ended the game with a run scored by Madison Sanchez

In game two, both teams got runs in early as FNU trailed 1-0 in the first before Gil connected on a three-RBI homer to put the Conquistador back on top. NCF posted three runs of their own on two errors from FNU's infield and a smooth RBI triple from Jena Edwards. Scoring woes returned for both squads until FNU struck gold in the bottom of the sixth after Annissa Quinonez scored on an error from NCF's center field.

FNU had seven hits in each contest and a combined three errors. NCF had 13 total hits and three errors,

Up Next: FNU remains at Weston, Fla., for a noon doubleheader against Florida Memorial University on Feb. 11.
