Conquistadors split afternoon against FMU Lions

WESTON, Fla. (Feb. 11, 2025) — Florida National (3-2) fell one run short of a sweep over the Florida Memorial University Lions (3-1), posting a 3-0 win in game one and a 5-4 loss to exit Vista Park Tuesday. FNU had no errors and nine hits in the opener before recording four errors and four hits in game two.

In game one, FNU broke the ice with an RBI single by Gianna Hall that bought enough time for some stellar base running from Yleisha Perez to make it a 1-0 affair. FNU's starting pitcher, Sophia White, was clutch in the circle, conceding her first two hits in the fourth inning but ending the frame with no runs scored.

FNU loaded the bases in the fourth to set up a costly walk on Perez that ran in Tara McCaffery. FMU's offense was once again shut down over the following three innings, and FNU made it a three-score game on a base hit from Alissia Vega to score Annissa Quinonez. This was FNU's second contest without any errors recorded, and White closed out the seventh with one hit allowed.

The second contest saw two scoreless innings before both teams had one score in the third frame. Bianca Campos was responsible for the game's first run on a base hit that ran in Kayla Jade Morales. FNU's opening score came courtesy of a Vega single that set up Perez to round the bases to home plate.

In the top of the fourth, FNU conceded three runs and four hits as the Lions conquered the frame for a 4-1 lead. Hall had two errors in the Lions' scoring stretch, as FNU looked to play itself back into contention with a clutch three-run fifth inning. Hall made up for her early blunder with a perfect sacrifice fly to right field that scored pinch runner Isabella Silva. FNU's other runs came from an RBI single from McCaffery and an RBI walk by Vega.

With the score standing at 4-4, FMU outlasted the Conquistadors on a run scored by Keyhara Alleyne on an errant throw from FNU's right fielder Sabrina Castelli. FNU was shut out in the seventh, as Madison Sanchez struck out swinging to close out the frame.

FNU is now 6-2 against the Lions all time and 2-2 in its last four meetings.

Up Next: FNU heads to Ave Maria, Fla., for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against the AMU Gyrenes on Feb 15.
