Pitching dominates FNU’s 1-0 win over Webber

FROSTPROOF, Fla. (Feb. 19, 2025) — Conquistador softball (5-3) survived a close battle for a 1-0 win against the Webber International University Warriors (2-8) Wednesday. Despite a rainout during the top of the second in game two, FNU showed toughness in the opener to exit the field of Frostproof High School on a high note.

In game one, leadoff hitter Yleisha Perez got things started with a base hit to Webber's shortstop. WIU regrouped and ended the frame without conceding any more hits. Both teams were denied advancement onto the field of play until Samantha Hudson got on board off an error from FNU's second baseman in the third. FNU ended the frame with a popped-up ball caught by catcher Alyssa Julien

Webber got hot with three hits in the fourth but was denied a run with the bases loaded on a brilliant defensive performance from FNU's outfield. The Conquistadors were finally able to break through in the sixth after Gianna Hall blasted a base hit to score Alissia Vega for the eventual game-winning run.

Starting pitcher Sophia White was a showstopper in the circle, pitching 6.2 innings and allowing just one walk. The sophomore also recorded six strikeouts before relief pitcher Annissa Quinonez came in to wrap up things in the seventh.

Webber recorded just one more hit before FNU closed out the game on an unassisted out at first, a line out to shortstop and a foul out to right field. FNU recorded five hits and one error. WIU was credited with no errors and four hits.

FNU got off to a great start in game two, taking a 1-0 lead in the first on a run scored by Julien. Tara McCaffery was responsible for the lead with a great single before rain ended things in the top of the second. FNU is now 9-4 against Webber all-time and 2-2 in its last four meetings opposite the Warriors.

Up Next: FNU will be in West Palm Beach, Fla., for a noon doubleheader against Keiser University Feb. 22.
