Florida National held in check, exits West Palm 0-2

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 22, 2025) — Florida National softball (5-5) was outmatched in a winless two-game afternoon in West Palm Beach, Fla., against Keiser University (9-3). The Seahawks totaled 25 hits through both games to drop FNU to 1-3 in its last four games.

The opener saw Keiser jump ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the second. Macy Schaaf got the ball rolling with a sacrifice fly to run in Lizzy Small. Kelsey Ganci was responsible for the final Keiser score of the frame after her base hit ran in second baseman Ashley Bullock. FNU remained scoreless until the top of the fifth rolled around.

Leadoff hitter, Yleisha Perez, came through with a base hit to left field that bought enough time for Annissa Quinonez to stride safely to home plate. Keiser, however, ended the frame with a fly out to left field on the next batter in the order, Alissia Vega. Unfortunately, Keiser built a hefty lead in the bottom of the inning, posting five hits and four runs on FNU's pitcher Brunella Beteta

Despite the 6-1 deficit, FNU showed some life with a home run from catcher Alyssa Julien to start the sixth. A two-RBI single from pinch hitter Isabella Silva put FNU right back into the action before Keiser retired the frame. KU was able to sure things up in a three-run inning that included two singles from Bridget Dunham and Genesis Iglesias.

FNU ended game one with seven hits and an error, while KU recorded 14 hits and one error.

KU went back to the batter's box in game two, taking a 3-1 lead after the first. FNU got on the scoreboard to open the game on a costly error by Keiser's Iglesias. This was a short-lived victory, as KU bounced back with a two-score double by third baseman Claire Czajkowski and a costly RBI walk to run in Iglesias.

The Seahawks then doubled its run scored with a three-RBI home run off Czajkowski's bat. FNU added what would be its final runs of the afternoon in the third thanks to RBI doubles from Tara McCaffery and Quinonez. Keiser landed its final blow in the fifth on a grand slam by pinch hitter Hollie Pabst.

The Seahawks had two errors in their 11-hit performance in game two, and FNU headed home with nine hits and one error in the books.

Up Next: Softball returns to Weston, Fla., for a noon doubleheader against the NAIA's No. 19-ranked St. Thomas Bobcats on Feb. 26.
