Softball overpowered by No. 19 Bobcats

WESTON, Fla. (Feb. 26, 2025) — Florida National's (5-7) losing slump continued in a winless afternoon opposite the NAIA's No. 19-ranked St. Thomas University Bobcats (10-0). Undefeated STU handed the Conquistadors an 8-0 loss in the noon opener before FNU fell 11-4 in game two.

The Conquistadors have a long history against their cross-town rivals. The last time these two softball powerhouse met, STU ended FNU's 2024 season in an elimination game in the NAIA Tournament. FNU exited Klamath Falls, Ore., with a 6-5 loss.

Game one on Feb. 26, saw STU set the tone with a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Isabella Andujar got things rolling on a two-RBI homer and pitcher Anna Toon's run on a groundout put pressure on FNU's bats early. Toon was also great from the circle, not allowing an FNU hit until the bottom of the second, thanks to second baseman Gianna Hall. Hall's hit came just before STU grabbed another run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Kaitlynn Martinez. FNU's fielding did not help, as the Conquistadors totaled five errors and STU kept a clean sheet with zero.

Both teams were held scoreless the next two innings, and STU broke through once more on an RBI single by Natalie Kopicova. RBI base hits from Martinez and Andujar, along with an RBI sacrifice fly by Toon, made it an 8-0 game in the sixth. The Conquistadors, unfortunately, were unable to post a score to avoid being run-ruled and settled for the 8-0, six-inning defeat to kick off the afternoon's action.

Notably, pitcher Brunella Beteta was in the circle for all six innings. Yleisha Perez and Alissia Vega joined Hall as the only Conquistadors to post a hit in the contest.

In game two, STU's bats found the other side of the outfield fence for a 5-0 lead in the third inning. Martinez started the home run parade with a three-run bomb to right field against FNU's Hayley Deegins. Toon and Gabriella Gilbert followed suit with solo homers of their own before pitcher Peyton Knight took over in the circle for the reeling Conquistadors.

Despite trailing by five runs, FNU made the game manageable in the fourth thanks to a two-score single by Isabella Silva and a dropped third strike that allowed Tara McCaffery to score on the passed ball.

To its credit, STU weathered this offensive explosion with an impressive four-run, five-hit performance in the fifth. The Bobcats went on to outscore FNU 2-1 in the next two frames, as Vega scored FNU's final run of the afternoon in the seventh.

The Conquistadors had four errors to STU's two and ended the home series with seven hits. STU had a 13-hit performance to cap off an explosive showing on the clay.

Up Next: On Feb. 28, softball will be in Sarasota, Fla., for two games against the Sun Conference's New College of Florida. Game one is set for 1 p.m.
