Florida National sweeps NCF Banyans on the road

SARASOTA, Fla. (Feb. 28, 2025) — Softball (7-7) got back on track with two strong victories against the New College of Florida Banyans (4-6) Friday afternoon. FNU is now 4-0 against NCF, sweeping the Banyans in home and away doubleheaders this season.

In game one, the Conquistadors claimed a 6-2 win in which both teams posted nine hits. Leadoff hitter, Yleisha Perez, got things started with a run scored on an error from NCF left fielder Ashlynn Senter. Thanysha Gil followed this run with her second home run of the season, scoring Alissia Vega for the unearned run.

In the fourth, Tara McCaffery grabbed FNU's fourth run of the afternoon thanks to an error from center fielder Ke'Asia Waters. FNU's dominant lead was short-lived as the Banyans got on the board in the fourth after Jaylin Padro's RBI single. Despite the score, NCF's fielding woes returned after Vega scored her second run of the afternoon after Gil made it to first on an error from Padro.

Vega later made it a 6-1 ball game after she sprinted home on a single from Gianna Hall. NCF grabbed a final run in the seventh by Saremi Flores after Quinonez posted the second FNU error of the victory. Vega had a perfect afternoon, going 3-3 from the batter's box, and pitcher Brunella Beteta posted her first win of the season with three strikeouts from the circle.

Game two was another offensive explosion for FNU, as the Conquistadors scored on Hall's fielder's choice and a Samantha Suarez error that ran in Gil. Quinonez doubled FNU's lead in the third on a brilliant two-RBI double against pitcher Jayleigh Totten.

Totten had a tough outing, tallying eight hits and eight runs allowed, but did collect three strikeouts before all was said and done. The Banyans' first run of the contest came off an error by Carollann McClelland. FNU went on to concede four NCF runs in the final four innings. Suarez homered in the fifth and grabbed an RBI single in the seventh.

Notably, Quinonez recorded an RBI single to score McCaffery, and Isabella Silva doubled in the seventh to score two unearned runs.

Up Next: FNU softball begins its stay at the Space Coast Games starting March 6 at 4:45 p.m. against Bethel University.
