Conquistadors open Space Coast Games undefeated

MELBOURNE, Fla. (March 6, 2025) — Florida National softball (9-7) had an impressive showing to open its stay at the USSSA Space Coast Spring Games. The Conquistadors defeated conference rival Fisher College (0-6) 16-0 in five innings before outlasting Cleary University (3-9) 4-0.

The Continental Athletic Conference's (CAC) Fisher College collided with a red-hot Conquistador squad, conceding a 16-run defeat in a 4:45 p.m. contest. The Conquistadors did most of their damage in the first inning, totaling 11 runs with FC's Valeria Soto in the circle.

FNU's base running was the real star of the show. FNU posted 15 stolen bases in the first frame alone. Yleisha Perez and Alissia Vega were the first FNU players to advance to home plate, scoring on wild pitches delivered by Soto. Gianna Hall and Thanysha Gil followed suit with runs scored on wild pitches, and Tara McCaffery made it a 5-0 affair on an error by catcher Yuliia Sokolova.

The calamity of errors defensively for Fisher continued with Madisyn Garduno scoring on the fifth wild pitch of the afternoon before Madison Sanchez strutted home for an unearned run on a passed ball. Bianca Bartow had the final score of the frame on a wild pitch before FNU's bats entered the chat.

Kirra James got things rolling for FNU with an RBI single, and freshman Carmen Stone brought the dugout to its feet on an RBI double to left field. Fisher was finally able to end the frame after Ciara Santiago was caught leaving the bag early but did not post a run for the remainder of the contest.

In the second, Lexie Phillips recorded a one-score double of her own before an astounding inside of the park home run by Alisha Vohs. In the third, FNU put the finishing touches on its first conference win with unearned runs by Stone, Santiago and Isabella Correa. FNU had five hits and one error, while the Falcons had two hits and four costly errors.

Game two was a more conservative offensive performance for the Conquistadors. Alyssa Julien put FNU up 1-0 in the first, scoring Vega on a single up the middle of the field. In the third, FNU added to its lead thanks to a triple by Gil that earned Vega her second run of the evening.

Cleary was shut down with just one hit through the first three innings on a base hit by second baseman Maddie Bunkoske. FNU was able to sure things up with a two-run outing in the fifth, where Julien ran in Vega on a triple to right center. Julien later made it home on a sacrifice fly off Gil's bat.

Both teams totaled five hits, and Cleary had the lone error of the contest. Pitcher Brunella Beteta picked up another win from the circle, allowing just one walk and posting a strikeout.
