Women’s tennis shuts out AMU for the first time in program history

AVE MARIA, Fla. (Feb. 26, 2025) — Florida National women's tennis (1-2) earned a much-needed 4-0 win over Sun Conference foe Ave Maria University (0-2). The Gyrenes are receiving votes in the latest NAIA Coaches' Poll but were outmatched on the courts of Ave Maria, Fla.

Since joining The Sun Conference last season, FNU has gone 2-0 on the road against the Gyrenes. In their last meeting, the Conquistadors escaped with a 4-3 victory in February 2024 and were able to improve on their performance Wednesday. 

In doubles play, Nadia Abad and Alara Juelide Akgul got things started with the fastest finish in their 6-3 win over Elizabeth Pince and Danna Nunez. Fabiola Bsereni and Natalia Calvo were even more dominant to clinch the opening point, topping AMU pair Maria Hofmeister and Melana Mourad 6-0. 

A close match featuring Julia Chodkowska and Vanessa Simone opposite Clara Penido Mariangel Nunez remained unfinished at 5-5. 

As singles play went underway, Simone shined with a stellar 6-0, 6-1 victory against Mariangel Nunez. Abad also dominated with her 6-0, 6-2 rout of Pince. A 6-2, 6-2 showing by Akgul proved to be enough to keep the Gyrenes off the board and grant FNU its first conference win of the season. 

Notably, FNU improved to 3-4 against the Gyrenes as a program and earned its first shutout victory versus AMU. 

Up Next: Tennis will be in Key Biscayne, Fla., March 17 at the Crandon Park Tennis Center for an afternoon match against (RV) Missouri Baptist University.
