Leurs and Marty Marrero earn double-doubles in loss to FMU

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Feb. 22, 2025) — Conquistador women's basketball (9-12) fell to the RV Florida Memorial University Lions (21-4) 83-58 to close out the 2024-25 regular season. FNU is now 1-9 against FMU all-time, its first-ever win coming last season on Jan. 29.

Florida National conceded 28 FMU points in the first quarter, ending the frame trailing by 11. Charlette Leurs and Fabiana Nieves played all 10 minutes of the opener and had six points each for their efforts. A made three from Kyla Cruz Baez and a converted field goal from Kaylynn Jean-Gilles rounded out all of FNU's scoring in the period.

All five FMU starters contributed to its opening 28 in the first. Off the bench, Kalea Rainey had four points before the Lions broke the game open in the second. FMU outscored FNU 24-13 behind a 2-2 performance from the floor by Makayla Transou. The Lions had effectively shut down Janelisse Marty Marrero, as the senior guard headed to halftime with just two points. Cruz Baez and Leurs continued to do the majority of the work on offense, combining for 11 points before the third quarter began.

The second half commenced with a positive offensive explosion from Marty Marrero. She totaled seven points in the period as FNU posted 15 in the frame. FNU's defense also picked up its intensity, holding FMU's second-half starters to a mere six points of production. Luckily for the home team, Rainey was great off the bench with six points on 3-4 shooting.

Florida National also kept pace in the fourth but suffered too large of a deficit early on to threaten FMU's lead in critical moments. The Lions went on to outscore FNU 15-13 in the final quarter, despite Leurs and Marty Marrero combining for nine points. Ebony Black-Smith's six in the final minutes was just enough to close out the battle in Miami Gardens, Fla.

Leurs led all scorers with 17 points and kept her double-double streak alive with a team-high 18 rebounds. Early struggles did not stop Marty Marrero from posting a double-double of 15 points and 12 assists.

Up Next: FNU returns to Lawrence, Kan., for the 2025 CAC Women's Basketball Tournament on Feb. 27. The Conquistadors will face Washington Adventist University in the quarterfinal round.
