Falcons soar in FNU’s 33-point loss in Temple Terrace

TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. (Feb. 17, 2025) — Conquistador men's basketball (5-17) suffered a lopsided defeat to Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) rival Florida College (11-16) 94-61 on Monday night. The FC Falcons defended their home court well despite 21 points from star FNU guard Caelum Ethridge.

These two CAC foes last met on Jan 7, when FNU escaped with a 79-73 overtime victory to kick off the Falcons' CAC Classic. It was the first time FNU had bested FC since the 2017-18 season and gave FNU some confidence entering Conn Gymnasium for a Presidents' Day battle with serious postseason implications.

Unfortunately for FNU, the Falcons got off to a great start to end the first half ahead 40-24. Nate Duda was automatic with 11 points and four steals in a restless 20-minute period for the forward. Malik Beauford and Stephon Martin played their part with a combined 18 points, to the dismay of a shell-shocked FNU squad.

Gary Adams had the best showing in the first half for FNU with six points and Jeremy Arnum followed closely behind with five. FNU shot 31% from the floor and connected on two out of 15 attempted threes in the half. The Conquistadors were also unable to take care of the ball, coughing it over 10 times before looking to regroup in the second period.

In the second, things went from bad to worse for the visiting Conquistadors. FC outscored Florida National 54-37 with nine different FC players recording at least two points in the final 20 minutes. Reserve Johnny Torrence led the way with 11 points on 3-5 shooting from three. FNU's shooting woes from long range persisted as the Conquistadors posted just four made threes in the second.

FNU was outrebounded 20-13 and its one bright spot was an 18-point explosion from Ethridge after a quiet first half. Jonathan Norman also showed signs of life with seven in the closing minutes and two offensive rebounds. Unfortunately, FC had built a healthy advantage that proved to be just too great for the Conquistadors to overcome.

Ethridge paced all scorers in the loss, while Adams and Norman combined for 23 points. Norman was one rebound shy of a double-double in the 13th meeting all-time between these two CAC powerhouses.

Up Next: Florida National faces the University of Fort Lauderdale Eagles on Feb. 19 in North Miami, Fla. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
