Softball departs Ave Maria with a 1-1 afternoon

AVE MARIA, Fla. (Feb. 15, 2025) — Florida National softball (4-3) went 1-1 on Saturday against The Sun Conference's Ave Maria University Gyrenes (3-8-1). The Conquistadors held on in game one for the 6-5 victory before closing out game two a run shy of the sweep, 3-2.

In the bottom of the first, AMU took a 1-0 lead in game one after Hailee Howe's RBI single to left field scored Nevaeh Wing. This was short-lived for the home team, as FNU made it a 3-1 affair with three consecutive one-score base hits by Sabrina Castelli, Yleisha Perez and Alissia Vega

FNU controlled the game until the fourth when pitcher Sophia White picked up the lone error for the Conquistadors in the fourth. AMU scored a run off White's throwing blunder and put itself ahead 4-3 after MU shortstop Mary McIntire and Wing ran safely to home plate. The Conquistadors hit a bit of a slump and were held scoreless in the fifth while AMU exited the bottom of the frame with a lead-off home run from Annabella Phillips.

Luckily for FNU, Castelli came up big down the stretch on a two-RBI double in the sixth and pinch runner Alexandra Trenholm scored what would become the game-winning run after an error from AMU's center fielder Cecilia Garrett. The Conquistadors' 3-0 run to close out the game proved to be just what the doctor ordered and they ended the opener with one error and 11 hits.

Game two was just as dramatic as FNU jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first. Thanysha Gil did her job with a sacrifice fly that ran in Perez and Hall posted an RBI single to put FNU in the driver's seat early. AMU's bat woke up in the bottom of the inning, tying things up on a one-score triple by Kate McIntyre and a sacrifice fly by game-one star Phillips.

McIntyre tripled again in the third to score Alexia Bracero, and this proved to be just enough to deliver the 3-2 victory for the home squad. FNU left runners on board in the next four innings but were unable to get any runs on the board. They did post another 11-hit outing with no errors recorded.

Softball is now 9-5 against AMU since 2020 and is 3-1 in its last four visits to Ave Maria, Fla.

Up Next: On Feb. 19, softball is on the road for another 1 p.m. doubleheader versus Webber International University.
