Conquistadors complete Haskell Classic 0-2

LAWRENCE, Kan. (Feb. 1, 2025) — Women's basketball (6-11) allowed 29 fourth-quarter points in a stunning 70-59 loss to the Northern New Mexico College Eagles (17-10). Florida National held a 35-24 lead at halftime but saw its offense go cold late in its third Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) loss this season.

Janelisse Marty Marrero was active early with eight points in the first quarter. FNU was also finding a confident Kyla Cruz Baez behind the three-point line for two clutch shots in the quarter. FNU outscored NNMC 18-15, as five different Eagles entered the box score with at least one converted field goal.

Before the midway point, Charlette Leurs and Marty Marrero posted 11 of FNU's 17 in the second quarter. Aaliyah Abdala and Cruz Baez both knocked down a three-pointer before the half came to a close and the Eagles found their offense at a loss. NNMC shot 18.8% in the frame with Briana Marquez leading the way in the frame with four Eagle points.

When play continued in the third, FNU found itself in an untimely scoring slump. Abdala and Leurs combined for all eight Conquistadors points in the period. Thanks to two made free throws from Abdala in the closing seconds of the quarter, FNU clung to a 43-41 lead at the beginning of the fourth.

Unfortunately, NNMC produced its best run of offense in the game's final chapter. The Eagles went 10-18 from the field, hitting nine threes to completely overwhelm a jarred FNU squad late in the game. Even though Leurs and Marty Marrero posted eight points a piece in the fourth, FNU could not deny the Eagles a come-from-behind victory in Lawrence, Kan.

Despite the loss, Leurs picked up her eighth consecutive double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Marty Marrero followed closely behind with 21 points and seven boards.

Up Next: The Lady Conquistadors are in North Miami, Fla., on Feb. 4 for a 7 p.m. contest against the UFTL Eagles.
