FNU concedes eight-point loss to CAC’s Northern New Mexico

LAWRENCE, Kan. (Feb. 1, 2025) — Conquistador men's basketball (4-15) suffered a close loss to the Northern New Mexico College Eagles (7-20) in its final game of the Haskell Classic. FNU is now 3-4 against Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) opponents this season, and the Conquistadors have yet to win back-to-back games.

The opening half saw NNMC take a slight 34-30 lead heading into halftime. Nigel Quaynor did a lot of the Eagles' heavy lifting on offense with 10 points in the period, while NNMC's Jordan Duda and Leo Gerardo contributed a combined 11 points off the bench. Meanwhile, FNU's Jeremy Arnum went 4-9 from the field for 13 of FNU's 34 points in the frame. Gary Adams was a great help with seven points and FNU went 9-22 from the floor before looking to cut NNMC's vulnerable lead.

When the second half began, Jayondre Leak put his team ahead by six on a clutch three-pointer with 13 minutes remaining on the clock. The Eagles were relentless on defensive rebounds, posting 17 in the second half. This slight edge in rebounding also helped the Eagles outscore FNU 45-41 to secure its seventh win of the season. Despite the loss, Ismael Baqai had a breakout performance with 11 second-half points.

Arnum and Adams contributed 17 in the final 20 minutes but a thunderous dunk from Quaynor put the final touches on a crushing loss for the Conquistadors in Lawrence, Kan.
FNU was paced by Arnum's 21-point game, and Adams recorded 16 and seven rebounds in seven minutes of rest. Matias Montezuma knocked down a few three-pointers for nine points.

Up Next: Men's basketball is in Miami Gardens, Fla., for a 7 p.m. rematch against the NAIA's No. 15-ranked Florida Memorial University Lions.
