Conquistadors exit Miami Gardens with 89-58 loss to Lions

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Feb. 10, 2025) — Men's basketball (4-16) fell behind early for its second loss to the Florida Memorial University Lions (20-5) in the 2024-25 season. The Lions are currently ranked No. 15 in the NAIA and used stellar interior pressure to overpower FNU 89-58.

In the first half, FMU owned a comfortable 45-21 lead entering the break. The Lions starting five totaled 27 points in the opening 20 minutes and reserve Felix Uadiale had a team-high 10 points on a perfect 4-4 from the floor. Terrin Hamilton also stole the show with nine points, while FNU relied on Caelum Ethridge's 12 to keep afloat. FNU had no other answer on the offensive side of the ball, shooting 29.2%.

The Conquistadors were also overthrown in the rebounding race 26-10, and FMU attempted a staggering 24 free-throw attempts before halftime rolled around. The Lions converted 18 shots from the charity stripe, while FNU went 8-10.

The second period saw FNU keep pace with the Lions thanks to a six-point explosion from center Jesus Rivas. FMU's former NAIA National Player of the Week, Latavious Mitchell, began to find his spots for eight early points in nine minutes. FNU had no counter of defense for Mitchell's size and skill underneath the rim, and the center went 3-6 from the floor at the 11:02 mark.

The Lions eventually outscored FNU 44-37 in the second half, thanks in part to eight from Uadiale. FMU continued to dominate the boards to close out the game, grabbing 24 rebounds while FNU only secured 12.

Notably, Matias Montezuma knocked down two threes en route to eight in the closing minutes. Freshman Vejas Matekonis showed some girt inside for eight points in 16 minutes on the floor, while Jeremy Arnum and Rivas combined for 12 points to close out the team's 16th loss of the season.

Ethridge had a team-high 14 points, followed closely behind by Matekonis' 11. FMU had four players in double figures and Uadiale led all scorers with 18.

Up Next: FNU will be in New Port Richey, Fla., for a 3 p.m. game against the Trinity College of Florida Tigers.
