Conquistadors swept by Rams in four-game series

HIALEAH, Fla. (Feb. 1, 2025) — Baseball (1-6) faced another tough outing against the offensive juggernaut of the Columbia International University Rams (4-0), falling in back-to-back contests 14-2 and 19-4. FNU recorded 13 hits in the afternoon doubleheader, and CIU exited Ernest R. Graham Park with a total of 28.

In game one, the Rams picked up right where they left off the previous night with four quick scores in the first inning. The Rams capitalized on a costly error from Samuel Del Valle and a wild pitch from starter Cole Philips en route to their early lead. FNU cut the visitor's advantage in half in the bottom of the first thanks to RBI base hits from Adrian Roman and Brian Jensen, scoring Erick Rodriguez and pinch runner Jhonny Saez

In the third, CIU recorded a massive four-run, five-hit frame to reclaim much-needed ground on the Conquistadors. Daniel Sidoti highlighted the inning with an RBI double to left before a 2-3 groundout on Maddux Smith ended the frame. The Ram's bats got hot once again in the fifth on a solo home run by Maurice Gomez.

FNU was held scoreless for the remainder of the contest, and the Rams added five more scores to its total before all was said and done in game one. Notably, right-handed pitcher Evan Dalmau made an impression and helped create three quick outs in the seventh.

Game two was another first-inning explosion from the Rams, and CIU jumped to a 6-0 lead after back-to-back RBI doubles from Maddux Smith and Brandon Arnold. With six runs and four hits in the first frame, both teams were scoreless until CIU's Mason Turner blasted a two-RBI home run in the fourth.

Despite trailing once again, FNU was back in business after some fielding missteps by the Rams granted FNU a four-run fourth frame. An error from the outfield for the Rams set the scene for runs by Endrys Nunez and Roger Viloria. Ismark Gonzalez also highlighted the inning with an RBI double to center field that bought time for Kevin Dominici to touch home plate.

Unfortunately, CIU's bats still had some juice left in the tank for a massive nine-score seventh inning. FNU used three different pitchers in the final offensive series for the Rams and CIU proved to once again have the Conquistadors' number with three RBI singles and two RBI doubles.

Up Next: FNU will host Oakwood University for a four-game home stand beginning on Feb. 5 with a noon doubleheader.
