FNU claims second place in USCAA Championship, falls to Paul Quinn 3-1

UNIONTOWN, Pa. (Nov. 8, 2025) — Florida National (15-16) put together a brilliant third set to extend its match against Paul Quinn College (19-14) Saturday at the 2025 USCAA Division I Volleyball National Championship, but ultimately suffered a 3-1 loss to the Tigers to end its title hopes. Kitula Amaya Morales and Ariana Long combined for 26 of FNU's 50 kills, while Morales had a team-high 22 digs.

This was the second meeting between these two teams at the USCAA Tournament, and PQC came up with a similar 3-1 win on Friday. This was FNU's chance to force a winner-take-all match following this 12:30 p.m. game in Uniontown, Pa. Paul Quinn took a hard-fought lead in the first with a 25-21 victory to open the game. Carrie Weston was a big part of the Tigers' success in the first, with six kills, including the final point of the first. Morales was impressive off the bat with five of FNU's 14 kills, but the Conquistadors committed eight attacking errors before moving on to the second.

PQC was able to hold off FNU in a 25-22 second set, posting 15 kills and six errors in the set. Chriselle Ferdinand and Morales had seven of FNU's 12 kills. In the final stretch of the second, Weston's kill put PQC up 24-22, and an attacking error from Morales made it a 2-0 affair. To its credit, FNU made things interesting with a 25-23 win in set three. Four consecutive kills from Ferdinand put FNU up 21-14, and Ailanie Ortega was able to end the third with a critical kill on a pass from Jaylin Garcia

Unfortunately for FNU, Paul Quinn pulled away with the victory in the fourth thanks in part to four kills from Weston, including back-to-back terminations to claim the 2025 USCAA title. FNU had its lowest number of kills in the match with eight, and ten attacking errors to come up just short of its third USCAA Championship. Notably, Taysha Ortega led the way with 24 assists, and Long had two of FNU's three solo blocks.

Up Next: FNU locks in on NAIA postseason play, taking on two matches in pool play of the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Tournament on Nov. 14.
