Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Brenda Bogle

Volleyball goes 1-1 in pool play at CAC Tournament

LAWRENCE, Kan. (Nov. 14, 2025) — Florida National (16-17) dropped its first match for the 2025 Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament against Westcliff University (14-13), 3-1, before bouncing back with a competitive 3-2 win over Carolina University (21-14).

Against the No. 6-seeded Westcliff Warriors, Florida National fell behind early with back-to-back 25-19 losses. FNU stormed back with a much-needed 27-25 win in set three, but ultimately were beaten 25-18 to end the match in the fourth. In set one, Chriselle Ferdinand's second kill of the frame put FNU within one point, 13-12, before Westcliff broke out with a 5-0 run to put FNU under immense pressure. WU's Joliayns Roman ended things with a thunderous kill set up by Amanda Ferreira, as FNU looked to regroup in the next set.

The Warriors held FNU to ten kills in the second to again a 2-0 match lead, hitting .260 for 18 kills en route to another 25-19 victory. FNU had its best performance in the third, using seven kills from CAC Attacker of the Year Kitula Amaya Morales. With the frame tied at 25 all, a service error from Daniela Sandoval and Lily Hitchcock's kill kept FNU alive in crunch time.

Unfortunately for FNU, Westcliff took an early 9-2 lead off another 5-0 run from the Warriors, forcing an FNU timeout from CAC Coach of the Year Carlos Huaroto-Luque. Despite the timely break, FNU was no match for 14 Warrior kills and saw its comeback hopes dashed by Roman's 11th kill of the match. Morales and Ferdinand had a combined 28 kills, while Ariana Long had 18 digs. Taysha Ortega paced FNU with 20 assists.

Game two was a high-stakes battle where FNU dug deep for a masterful 3-2 win over Carolina, its second victory over the Bruins this season. FNU exited the first set trailing 1-0, after falling 25-23. Blocks by Rachel Powell and Kammi Naude put CU up 24-19, and despite a 4-0 run from FNU changed by Morales at the service line, the Bruins took the frame on a termination from Britney Comolli.

The following set saw a bump over by Ortega put FNU ahead 8-1, and FNU never looked back. The Conquistadors used 14 kills and a set-ending service error by Emma-Grace Dubuc to tie the match at one set apiece. In the third, FNU made some mental mistakes with four service errors and allowed three aces in a frame that was close from the first serve. Ferdinand and Okoro had back-to-back kills to make it a 24-23 Bruin lead, but CU ended the third with a kill from Britney Comolli.

CU did lead 2-1, but FNU avoided another upset loss in four with a decisive 25-10 win to force a fifth set. FNU tallied five service aces and 10 kills, capturing the fourth on an attacking error by SarahEliz Samuels. The Conquistadors used this momentum to outlast a tough Bruin team in the fifth. The Conquistadors had a comfortable 14-10 lead late, but the Bruins had no quit in them, making it a 14-13 affair off a kill by Samuels. Thankfully, Ferdinand delivered match point on her 21st kill of the game.

Morales posted 12 kills and a team-high 18 digs in FNU's final match of the afternoon. Ivette Sandoval posted 22 assists, and FNU had four assisted blocks.

Up Next: FNU awaits the rest of pool play to see how tomorrow's slate in the CAC Tournament semifinal round shakes out.
