Stifling full-court defense earns FNU its first win of 2025-26

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Nov. 6, 2025) — In a close battle against the Trinity College of Jacksonville Eagles (1-2), Florida National (1-2) relied on multiple steals in the half-court and 23 points from newcomer Ziul Gonzalez for a 61-56 win on the road. This was also the Conquistadors' first win under head coach Chanel Davila.

To start the evening action in Duval County, FNU had a 13-7 lead thanks to a seven-point burst from Gonzalez in a stellar performance by the freshman. TCJ's M'lani Vitela had four points in the frame as FNU allowed just three other Eagles to put the ball in the net. Maria De Gracia Karamanites and Lamaria Williams picked up a steal apiece before both teams headed to the benches before the second quarter commenced.

Before halftime, Gonzalez kept her foot on the gas with eight points despite FNU being outscored 16-12 by the Eagles in the frame. TCJ was able to tie the game at 25 all thanks to a nine-point run by Alexandra Perez and Jaedin Houston. FNU was beaten on the glass 12-6 and was looking to put some real distance between them on the home team in the third.

After the half, TCJ was able to hunt around despite a very effective full-court press by the Conquistadors in the latter portions of the third and fourth quarters. Senior Hermione Hicks was especially good at jumping passes from the Eagles on FNU's side of the court, converting a pair of steals into easy layups. Hicks ended the quarter with six points on 2-3 shooting and converted two free throws to give FNU a two-possession lead with 22 seconds on the clock.

De Garcia was also outstanding defensively, picking up crucial offensive rebounds and steals when FNU needed them most.

With the victory, FNU is now 6-0 in as many meetings versus the Eagles, its last loss coming during the 2019-20 season.
