FNU succumbs to second-half burst in loss to STU Bobcats

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Nov. 4, 2025) — Despite a thrilling opening half, Florida National (0-2) allowed 24 third-quarter points from the St. Thomas University Bobcats (3-1) for its second loss of 2025. Maria De Gracia Karamanites used her agility around the rim for a team-high 23 points and six rebounds, as FNU drops to 1-10 against STU since 2019-20.

Florida National entered Tuesday's game after losing 84-61 at home against Ave Maria University and were seeking some revenge against the Gyrenes' conference rivals in Miami Gardens. The first quarter proved to be a competitive battle with both sides pushing the pace in the open floor. Ziul Gonzalez led the charge early with six of FNU's 15 points in the frame, while STU's Isabella Rivera and Jaliyah Weekes combined for 12 of STU's 18.

Both teams were shooting the ball poorly to start, hovering in the mid to high 30s, and four missed free throws from the Bobcats helped FNU keep things interesting heading into the second. The home team went into the break up 35-30, and reigning Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Defensive Player of the Week Kaylee Llanos ended the half with seven points and three steals.

Hermione Hicks was clutch off the bench with a block in transition and a made three to cut STU's lead to two, but a buzzer-beating three from Jaliyah Weekes ended the half. Weekes' three capped off an impressive nine-point, three-rebound second quarter from the redshirt sophomore.

As the third quarter rolled along, STU found another gear offensively with back-to-back threes from Samantha Vales and Isabella Rivera to put the Bobcats ahead by 11. A crafty layup by De Gracia at the 6:35 mark was FNU's first basket of the half, and the Panama City, Panama, native cashed in on a three-point play at the charity stripe. De Gracia ended the frame with 13 of FNU's 18 while the Conquistador bench was outscored by STU's reserves 8-0.

In the final period, STU was able to keep itself in control of the ball game by outscoring FNU 15-10 behind four points from Katrina Litte. Llanos added five to her total in the fourth, ending the night with 14 points, six assists, and five steals. Gonzalez was another big contributor with six rebounds, four assists and 14 points.

Up Next: The Conquistadors head to Trinity College of Jacksonville Thursday for a 6 p.m. game against the Eagles.
