Conquistador volleyball drops to 0-2 at home, loses to No. 12 STU

HIALEAH, Fla. (Oct. 7, 2025) — Women's volleyball (8-11) played a valiant match against the NAIA's No. 12-ranked St. Thomas University Bobcats (14-4) Tuesday. The Conquistadors tied the game with a victory in set two, ultimately losing the final two frames and falling to 0-2 at Bucky Dent Park.

Both teams entered Hialeah, Fla., looking to build some momentum on the court. FNU posted a great win over Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) rival Florida College on Sept. 26, while STU dropped an uncharacteristic conference match to Southeastern University last Saturday.

STU looked focused to open its match against FNU, grabbing a quick 25-11 win in set one behind 14 kills. The Conquistadors scored a .042 attacking percentage while STU cruised with an impressive .407 percentage at the net. STU went on a 7-0 run to close the opening game, drawing three-straight service aces by Alexandra Bruno off reception attempts by Kitula Amaya Morales

Things changed course in set two after FNU returned to form, attacking the net. The Conquistadors went on their own scoring run, going 7-1 to take a 16-11 lead with freshman Ailanie Ortega at the service line. Morales got the last kill of the frame, sending both sides to the opposite bench for the third frame.

STU, however, took over once again, the third to score a 2-1 match lead on a dominant 25-13 win in the third and a 25-11 win to close the game in set four. FNU was held to just 12 combined kills throughout the third and fourth games while STU posted 12 in each set.

FNU's Chriselle Ferdinand and Morales combined for 23 of FNU's 32 kills in the match. Notably, senior Ivette Sandoval recorded 20 assists. FNU is now 3-9 against STU all-time and grabbed its first set victory over the Bobcats since the 2021 season.

Up Next: FNU looks to stay unbeaten in conference play at the Continental Athletic Conference Classic hosted by the Carolina University Bruins, starting Oct. 10.
