Gyrenes spoil FNU’s return to Bucky Dent 84-61

HIALEAH, Fla. (Oct. 29, 2025) — For the first time since February 2024, Florida National women's basketball (0-1) stepped foot on the court of Bucky Dent Park in front of a home crowd, hosting The Sun Conference's Ave Maria University Gyrenes (1-2). Despite 16 from Kaylee Llanos Wednesday night, the Conquistadors fell by 23 to AMU and dropped to 0-5 to the Gyrenes in as many games.

In the first quarter, AMU got to an early 27-15 lead thanks to eight points from Ashley Chilson. The 6-1 sophomore from Eleva, Wisc., caused real havoc for FNU on the boards with four of AMU's 10 boards in the quarter. Additionally, Parker Straub found her shot early with nine points on 3-4 shooting from three. FNU was paced by five points from newcomer Ziul Gonzalez while Llanos and Jaylyn Laguna each knocked down a three before the opener came to a close.

Before the half, FNU kept things close with 16 points in the second to match AMU's 16. Llanos was a big part of this push with nine points, three rebounds, an assist and a steal to close out the half. Notably, Hermione Hicks provided some support off the bench with a circus, no-look layup to make it 29-17 with six minutes left on the clock.

In the final two frames, however, FNU's defensive struggles were on full display, as Chilson and Elena Barnes attacked the rim with ease for 13 of AMU's 18 in the third. Laguna was stout in the third with five points but picked up four fouls in the early portion of the fourth. Maria De Gracia Karamanites did manage to post an impressive eight points in the fourth, and made two of her four free throw attempts before AMU delivered its first win of the young 2025 season.

Llanos' 16 points were a team high while De Gracia and Laguna followed closely behind with 10 apiece. Gonzalez and Llanos each had a team-high four assists, and Gonzalez's seven rebounds led all FNU players.
