Seniors Ortega and Sandoval honored before match against Ave Maria

HIALEAH, Fla. (Oct. 21, 2025) — Florida National volleyball (13-12) recognized seniors Ivette Sandoval and Taysha Ortega before FNU's 3-0 loss to the Ave Maria University Gyrenes (7-12) Tuesday night. FNU ends the 2025 season 1-3 at home and 0-2 against the Gyrenes.

Sandoval and Ortega were given a special ceremony before the first serve was thrown at Bucky Dent Park. Coach Carlos Huaroto-Luque read speeches about both athletes' illustrious collegiate careers, as family members huddled for pictures at midcourt. When play began just past 7 p.m., AMU was quick to strike with a 25-20 win in set one. FNU had seven kills and seven errors in a less-than-ideal start to its home finale.

A kill from Beatriz Rissi ended the first, while Chriselle Ferdinand and Kitula Amaya Morales combined for three of FNU's seven kills. In the second, AMU seemed even more comfortable, earning a 20-15 victory in the frame. The Gyrene defense was active, ending the set on a block by Elle Malczewsk. FNU was outscored 19-9 down the stretch despite five combined kills from Morales and Grace Leffler

In the final frame, FNU was stout through two-thirds of the set and took a strong 22-15 lead after an attacking error by Rissi. AMU kept working the ball well and battled back with an unprecedented 5-0 run to tie that match at 22 on an attacking error from Ferdinand. Both teams traded blows, but AMU pulled away late with a kill from Greta Heiney and an attack error by Morales to win the set 27-25.

FNU was paced by nine kills from Morales and Ferdinand. Sandoval and Ortega combined for all 31 of FNU's assists, while Jaylin Garcia had a team-high 16 digs.

Up Next: FNU is back on the court tomorrow, facing a rematch against Weber International University at 7 p.m. on the road.
