Leurs extends double-double streak in loss to Haskell

LAWRENCE, Kan. (Jan. 31, 2025) — Florida National (6-10) fell to the Continental Athletic Conference's (CAC) Haskell Indian Nations University (10-12) in the first of two games in Lawrence, Kan. Despite the 84-57 loss, FNU's Charlette Leurs continued her double-double streak with her seventh in eight games started this season for the senior forward.

In the first quarter, FNU allowed a 16-6 run from Haskell to start this conference battle at the Coffin Sports Complex. Leurs posted four of her team-high 25 in the first ten minutes and Janelisse Marty Marrero was the only other Conquistador to record any points in the frame. Meanwhile, eight different Haskell players contributed to their team's early advantage. Thirteen of Haskell's 16 in the frame came from the bench and Myona Dauphinais led her squad with three early points.

Before halftime, FNU began to fight back with an 18-point second quarter. Leurs had nine points and three rebounds to close out the first half. Seniors Marty Marrero and Kyla Cruz Baez posted four and five points, respectively, to end the half. Haskell, however, was still finding its spots on the court, shooting 47% in the frame. Dauphinais was clutch with nine points on three made threes, and she was followed closely behind by Mahpiya Irving's five-point explosion from the bench to end the half.

In the third, Haskell locked up the contest by outscoring FNU by 17. The home team went 5-10 from the three-point line and shot 55% from the floor to make it a 67-37 ball game heading into the fourth. Leurs was still effective in the third with eight points, five rebounds, and an assist, but Haskell found a way to shut down Marty Marrero on offense. Notably, Haskell's Tierzah Penn was seemingly undeniable with 19 in the frame, shooting 7-9 with just two minutes of rest in the third.

Both teams shot the ball well in the fourth but Haskell did more than enough to secure an important win on its home turf well before the final frame rolled around. Along with Leurs' impressive double-double of 25 points and 14 boards, Cruz Baez and Marty Marrero combined for 24. Valeria Castro and Hermione Hicks were responsible for all eight of FNU's points from its bench.
