Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Brenda Bogle

Arnum and Adams lead FNU to a 91-78 win over Haskell

LAWRENCE, Kan. (Jan. 31, 2025) — Conquistador men's basketball (4-14) produced a dominant 91-78 win over Haskell Indian Nations University (6-19) on the road to improve to 3-3 in Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) play. Five Conquistadors reached double figures in FNU's largest conference win so far in 2024-25.

In the first half, FNU generated more than enough offense in the early goings to take a comfortable 42-27 lead at the break. Notably, transfers Jeremy Arnum and Jonathan Norman each posted 10 points in the half. Matias Montezuma came off the bench for a 2-4 performance from three en route to eight first-half points, while Gary Adams recorded five points on 2-2 shooting from the field.

As FNU's offense flourished in the opening 20 minutes, Haskell struggled to find timely buckets. HINU's Bryan Strom paced his squad with seven points despite his bench being held to just six total points. Trey Gaines and DK Middleton combined for eight of Haskell's first-half points and looked to mount a comeback in the second half.

Unfortunately for Haskell, FNU was able to put up 48 in the second half behind a combined 21 points from Arnum and Adams. Center Vejas Matekonis was great underneath the basket for eight points in 11 minutes off the bench. Fellow freshman Omar Baqai also got in on the action with five points on two made baskets and Montezuma continued to find his spots to exploit HINU's defense with seven points.

To its credit, Haskell did outscore FNU by three in the second frame but did not do enough to end this CAC battle as the victor. Strom had a team-high 20 points and three other HINU players ended the night with ten points or more.

Arnum wrapped up his evening with a double-double of 20 points and 10 boards to go along with four assists. Adams was knocking on the door of a double-double but ended the night with nine rebounds and 16 points. Montezuma and Norman both racked up 15 points on six made field goals.

Up Next: Florida National exits Lawrence, Kan., with an afternoon match against Northern New Mexico College tomorrow. The game is set for 4 p.m.
