Florida National bested by a 41-run stampede from Rams

HIALEAH, Fla. (Jan. 31, 2025) — Florida National baseball (1-4) suffered tough 10-3 and 31-5 losses at home against the Columbia International University Rams (2-0). In FNU's first home series of the 2025 regular season, the Conquistadors totaled 12 hits through both contests and the Rams boasted 26 in game two at Ernest R. Graham Park.

In game one, CIU took an early 2-0 lead after scoring on an error from FNU's second baseman  Samuel Del Valle and an RBI sacrifice fly courtesy of Daniel Sidoti. FNU cut the lead in half during the third inning after a ground ball put in play by Fausto Sanchez ran in shortstop Jason Altuve

The Rams answered FNU's score with a solo home run by game-one star, Sidoti, at the start of the fourth. Despite the unfortunate play, FNU's Adrian Roman made his own show-stopping display by hitting a one-RBI homer at the tail end of the inning. FNU was ultimately outscored 7-1 through the next three frames, with its one run coming on a textbook out-of-the-park hit by newcomer Christopher Rivera in the sixth.

The Rams tallied eight total hits to close out the game, including four in the seventh to hand FNU its third consecutive loss. Game one proved to be just a glimpse at what the Rams were capable of on offense, as FNU went through five pitchers in the opener and eight in the 3 p.m. sequel.

Game two's first inning was a tough break for the Conquistadors, as the home team conceded seven runs and eight hits in the period. CIU's crushing run in the first was highlighted by a three-RBI home run by Brandon Arnold. Following the Rams' seventh hit of the inning, FNU was forced to make an early sub on the mound, and Isaiah Franco relieved Keorden Leito to end the first.

Franco would not return in the second inning and Julio Beltre saw four runs scored and two hits recorded before his time in the contest came to an end in the second. In the third, things went from bad to worse for the Conquistadors. CIU's Maurice Gomez and Mason Turner posted grand slams en route to a 10-run inning for the visiting team.

The Rams went on to add nine more scores en route to 31 through seven innings. FNU got on the board in the fourth after an error from the Ram's infield allowed Roman and Rivera to make it to home plate. Rivera grabbed an RBI single in the fifth that scored sub Jose Medina and before the night was over, Sanchez bombed a two RBI home run to close out the sixth for the Conquistadors.

Up Next: FNU seeks to end its four-game series against CIU on a high note with a noon doubleheader tomorrow.
