FNU thwarted by No. 18 Gyrenes

AVE MARIA, Fla. (Jan. 2, 2025) — Conquistador (1-11) men's basketball suffered a tough night against a stout No. 18-ranked Ave Maria University team (12-3) to start its 2025 campaign. AMU delivered a 120-73 victory at the Tom Golisano Field House despite five Conquistadors landing in double digits.

The first half saw FNU allow 63% shooting from the floor for the Gyrenes, resulting in a massive deficit in the early goings. Forward Miles Monchecourt was a one-man show, posting 24 points thanks to four made threes. Jonathan Effertz also found his long-range shot, recording 11 points as AMU went 10-20 from the three-point line.

Unfortunately, FNU went 11-31 from the field in what felt like an overwhelming first half. AMU's stellar full-court press forced 16 Conquistador turnovers. Despite some struggles on the ball for the visiting squad, Joshua Milla accounted for 10 of FNU's 31 in the half. Caelum Ethridge and Jeremy Arnum combined for 12, as FNU trailed by 39 points heading into the second frame.

FNU was outscored 50-42 in the second half and was led by Ethridge's 10 points. Gary Adams played all 20 minutes in the period and recorded seven points while FNU pushed the pace for open layups in transition. To his credit, Jonathan Norman showed dominance underneath the rim with eight points and six boards in the half.

FNU's notable performances were clouded by nine different AMU players making their mark in the box score, paced by 10 points from junior Michael Klekas. Ethridge and Arnum collaborated for 29 points while Norman had a near double-double of 11 points and seven boards when all was said and done from Ave Maria, Fla.

Notably, sophomore Ralph Laurent produced 10 points, two rebounds and an assist in 11 minutes on the bench.

Up Next: FNU heads to Temple Terrace, Fla., on Jan. 7 for a 7 p.m. contest against Florida College at the CAC Classic.
