FNU utilizes 17-point overtime period to best Falcons

TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. (Jan. 7, 2025) — Florida National (2-11) closed out a much-needed Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) win against the Florida College Falcons (5-13) in a 79-73 overtime nail-biter. The dramatic victory marked FNU's first CAC and second overall victory of the 2024-25 season.

The first half was a prelude to an incredibly close, competitive battle on the court of Conn Gymnasium. FC held a slim and vulnerable 29-25 lead as seven different Conquistadors scored at least one point in the period. FNU's Caelum Ethridge led the charge with five points while Jonathan Norman and Joshua Milla combined for eight in a 9-30 shooting performance for FNU from the floor.

For the Falcons, Lareon Ginnis was the star of the show, with nine first-half points. Seven points from Nate Duda gave the home team a slight edge heading into the break. FC had its own struggles on offense, shooting 35% and connecting on just two of 13 threes attempted.

In the second, both sides continued to trade blows with neither side securing a comfortable advantage. Gary Adams was undeniable down the stretch, posting 11 points on 3-4 shooting from the field and a perfect 2-2 from the free-throw line. FNU's shot selection improved in the second half, as the Conquistadors landed at a 42.4% completion rate en route to a contentious final minute of the second half.

Trailing 62-20 after a made jumper from Keegan Phillips with 76 seconds remaining. Adams was up to the challenge and had a clutch mid-range shot that secured FNU's opportunity to close things out in overtime. The Conquistadors found an extra gear in its final five minutes of play, especially after Ethridge went off for eight of FNU's final 17 points. The California native went 4-5 from the charity stripe to upset the Falcons in front of FC's home crowd.

Notably, Norman was critical down the stretch for FNU and ended the evening 7-12 for 15 points. Ethridge also recorded 15 en route to a double-double after he collected 14 rebounds, and Adams led all FNU scorers with 16 points in 20 minutes of play.
